Both work well for pike, but they suit different anglers
Although I now like to use a period reel with glass rods, I strongly believe that matching a rod to a period reel takes a back seat to using the right line for the matter at hand, aesthetics be damned
What you do need is a nail (or a clamp with the center screw facing upwards) in the edge of table on the far side away from you
Its not all happening at the same time on every lake, so you get a lot of that mix
To reduce the slack as much as possible, ensure you use an appropriate sized sinker for the conditions, use braided line, and reverse back on the line if needed, so it drops as close to vertical as possible
